Position Summary

We have an opening for a full-time Legal assistant/Paralegal. The ideal candidate will have experience researching, drafting pleadings under attorney supervision, scheduling, and having familiarity in the areas of Housing/Landlord-tenant, Public Benefits, and Veteran Benefits. Experience with veterans' issues is preferred, but not mandatory.

This position requires good oral and written advocacy skills and a willingness to be an advocate for the indigent and veteran client population. Job duties include, but are not limited to, conducting legal assessments, performing intakes, and case management. Other job duties include conducting outreach and assisting in family law and veteran matters. This position also offers the opportunity to learn about both private and public entities on unique military/veteran issues and laws. Bilingual skills are a plus, but not required. This is a great opportunity to be part of a grassroots Veterans Advocacy program that is being replicated across the country.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience serving low-income, Veterans, or other marginalized communities preferred but not required;
  • A demonstrable awareness and sensitivity to the needs of the populations we serve is necessary;
  • Ability to work effectively with a large caseload and function professionally within a highly stressful environment;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills;
  • Ability to work independently at times and also as an effective part of a team, including other attorneys, support staff, volunteers, and community partners;
  • Excellent written and communication skills;
  • Ability to work constructively with others;
  • The ability to speak more than one language is a plus;
  • A willingness to, at times, work beyond a minimum seven-hour workday, including evenings and weekends;
  • Strong typing skills;
  • Opening and Closing Case Files in Legal Server database;
  • Scheduling Appointments and follow ups;
  • Scanning and uploading of case documents;
  • Taking and returning of phone messages from clients and other involved parties;
  • Preparing correspondence;
  • Reviewing client eligibility, along with preparing and sending intake applications to clients;
  • Other duties as needed by Staff Attorney
