Locomotive Diesel Mechanic - IL - On Site

Position Summary
We are looking for a skilled Mechanic to assemble, maintain and repair machinery and vehicles. You will be responsible for ensuring functionality and reliability of locomotives, machines, engines, and mechanical systems. An excellent mechanic must have manual dexterity and great attention to detail. They must be able to work with various machines and tools as well as follow all safety precautions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Build and assemble machines or mechanical components according to requirements.
- Conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability.
- Troubleshoot reported problems and resolved them in a timely manner.
- Perform thorough maintenance on machinery, equipment, and systems.
- Keep logs of work and report on issues
- Perform air brake tests and inspect materials, equipment, and machinery for any defects or unsafe conditions.
- Operate locomotives between various shop locations, service tracks, and switching areas, and line switches and operate derails to assist hostlers.
- Safely and effectively operate shop machines and tools, which may include forklifts, backhoes, bobcats, mobile cranes or high-pressure steam cleaning equipment.
- Communicate effectively with team members via hand signals on service track and other areas.
- Take initiative, make meaningful contributions, be open to change, and take responsibility for the quality and timely completion of one's tasks.
- Ensure compliance with all rules and regulations for safety and operations.
- Ensure the safety of self and co-workers.
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, contractors and/or customers and effectively handle controversy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Have normal depth perception to judge the speed and distance of locomotives being moved in the service area.
- Able to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel and lift and carry objects weighing up to 85 lbs.
- Safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces.
- Must have manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and ability to perform physically strenuous work.
- Must be able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays and identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances.
- Able to detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and testing.
- Able to make frequent coordinated hand movements to grasp, place, or move objects, and the ability to respond quickly to sounds.
- Aptitude in using various hand tools (screwdrivers, hammers etc.) and precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers).
- A strong commitment to all health and safety guidelines.
- Very good communication skills • A problem-solving ability.
- Very good physical strength and stamina.
- Willing to work in confined and/or small spaces.
- Willing to work various shifts, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Agree to wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires.
- Must be willing and able to work around large equipment such as railcars, locomotives, and cranes.
- Work at heights of 10 feet or more.
Education & Experience
- Proven experience as Mechanic.
- High school diploma is preferred; Certification from a vocational school or completion of apprenticeship is a definite plus.
- Basic electronic OR high voltage electricity experience.
- Basic hand AND power tool experience.
- Basic mechanical experience.
- Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions.
