Job Summary

The Radiologic Technologist is responsible for performing specialized and difficult diagnostic imaging examinations of patients, ionizing radiation to render optimum images which are used to support diagnoses and provide insight into medical issues, concerns or conditions. This position conducts preliminary analysis on images and collaborates with doctors and other Healthcare professionals to interpret images. This position assists in the training of students and technologists. The Technologist maintains optimum timeliness, accuracy, proficiency, efficiency, and safety during the execution of duties, and works closely with patients to ensure they have an understanding of procedures and are comfortable during procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Apply Principles of Radiation Protection - Applies Principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self and others. Immobilizes patient as required for appropriate examination. Determines appropriate radiographic technique exposure factors. Utilizes appropriate shielding devices. Exchanges and properly maintains film badge dosimeter. (5%)
  • Maintain Records - Corroborates patients clinical history with procedure, assuring information is documented and available to practitioner. Assists in maintaining records, respecting confidentiality and established policy. Provides proper patient explanation with appropriate consent forms for interventional procedures. (5%)
  • Perform Diagnostic Radiographic Procedures - Selects and operates radiography equipment, imaging, and associated accessories to successfully perform procedures. Positions patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability, comfort and dignity. Evaluates radiographs or images for technical quality, assuring proper identification is recorded. Practices aseptic techniques as necessary.
  • Quality Patient Care - Provides attention and concern for the physical, psychological and age-specific needs of the patient. Understands and recognizes a life threatening condition and can implement basic life sustaining actions. Perform AIDET.
  • Provide Education to Patients and Students - Prepares patient for procedure, providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety. Provides patient with post procedural instructions. Demonstrates and instructs equipment manipulation and positioning skills to students. Instructs student on film critique and evaluation. Supervises the clinical activities of students and is with student for repeat exposures. Performs application of didactic material.
  • Effective Communication - Effectively communicates with team, staff, patients, physicians, and guests. Demonstrates flexibility in responding to staffing issues and participates as an effective member of the team. Shares significant information with Supervisor and Manager. Participates in department performance improvement activities. Effectively assist with instruction and orientation of new coworkers. Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers colleagues.
  • Room Maintenance - Cleans, maintains, and restocks inventory rooms.
  • Physician Collaboration - Collaborates on medical issues with physicians.
  • Diagnostic Imaging Exams -Completes general diagnostic imaging exams and procedures by providing optimal images for review, proper annotation, markers, evaluates and submits images according to policy and protocol.
  • Patient Identification - Confirms patient identity and obtains and records patient identification, medical history, or test results; reviews and updates patient documentation in EMR/PACS.
  • Safety Protocol - Practices established safety guidelines and utilizes ALARA radiation reduction tools and techniques.
